How to rotate pages in a PDF on Mac

Scanned documents often end up sideways or upside-down. Whether you need to rotate a single page or fix an entire document, Mac gives you several ways to correct page orientation in your PDFs.

Why PDF pages end up rotated incorrectly

The most common cause is scanning. Many flatbed and sheet-fed scanners do not detect page orientation, so documents placed sideways on the glass or fed in landscape orientation produce rotated pages. Some scanners also misidentify the orientation of pages with minimal text.

Another source is combining documents from different sources. When merging PDFs, pages from different scanners, cameras, or export tools may have inconsistent orientations. A contract might have portrait pages mixed with landscape tables, creating a disorienting reading experience.

Rotating pages with Preview

Open the PDF in Preview and select the page thumbnail you want to rotate in the sidebar (View > Thumbnails). Then use Tools > Rotate Left or Rotate Right (keyboard shortcuts Command-L and Command-R). You can select multiple thumbnails with Command-click to rotate several pages at once.

Preview applies rotations immediately and saves them when you close the file (or use File > Save). The limitation is that Preview does not offer a way to rotate pages by arbitrary angles, only 90-degree increments, and there is no batch option for applying different rotations to different pages in a single step.

Rotating pages with File Studio

File Studio displays all your PDF pages as thumbnails in a grid, making it easy to spot pages that need rotation. Click any page thumbnail and use the rotation controls to turn it 90 degrees left or right. You can also select multiple pages and rotate them all at once.

File Studio's visual approach makes it faster to fix complex documents where different pages need different rotations. You can see the entire document at a glance, identify all the problem pages, and correct them in a single editing session before saving.

For recurring workflows involving scanned documents, you can combine rotation with other operations like compression and page reordering, saving time by handling everything in one pass.

Why PDF pages end up rotated incorrectly

The most common cause of incorrectly rotated PDF pages is document scanning. Flatbed and sheet-fed scanners sometimes capture pages in the wrong orientation, especially when mixing landscape and portrait pages in the same batch. Automatic document feeders (ADFs) can introduce rotation errors if pages are fed sideways or if the scanner's auto-orientation detection fails.

Another frequent cause is combining documents from different sources. A merged PDF might include portrait-orientation text pages alongside landscape spreadsheets or diagrams. Each page retains its original orientation, creating an inconsistent reading experience that requires selective rotation.

PDF pages have an internal rotation property (/Rotate) that specifies how the page should be displayed, independent of how the content is actually stored. A page with /Rotate 90 stores its content in one orientation but instructs the viewer to rotate it 90 degrees for display. Some PDF tools modify this property rather than actually rotating the content data, which can cause inconsistencies between viewers.

Rotation methods and their differences

There are two technical approaches to rotating a PDF page. The first changes the /Rotate property in the page dictionary, which tells PDF viewers to display the page at a different angle. This is fast and does not alter the content data, but some applications may ignore or misinterpret the /Rotate value.

The second approach actually transforms the content stream, applying a rotation matrix to all the drawing operations on the page. This permanently changes the content orientation and is universally compatible, but it requires rewriting the page data and can slightly increase file size. File Studio uses the content-transform approach for maximum compatibility.

Preview on macOS lets you rotate pages using Tools, then Rotate Left or Rotate Right. This modifies the /Rotate property, which works in most cases but may not persist in all workflows. If you rotate pages in Preview and the rotation is lost when opening in another tool, re-rotate using File Studio's content-transform method for a permanent fix.
