When rotating by exact 90-degree multiples, no pixel data is lost because each pixel maps directly to a new position. Arbitrary-angle rotation requires resampling, where new pixel values are interpolated from surrounding pixels, which can introduce slight softening. Modern algorithms minimize this quality loss, but repeated arbitrary rotations will gradually degrade image quality.

Understanding your conversion options
Rotation Angle
File Studio rotates in quarter turns: 90 degrees clockwise, 90 degrees counterclockwise, or 180 degrees. Quarter turns move pixels without resampling, so no detail is lost to interpolation.
Flip Direction
Horizontal flip mirrors the image left to right (like looking in a mirror). Vertical flip turns the image upside down. These can be combined with rotation; for example, a horizontal flip followed by a 90-degree rotation is equivalent to a specific transposition.
Dimensions
A 90-degree rotation swaps width and height, so a 4000x3000 landscape photo becomes 3000x4000 portrait. A 180-degree rotation or a flip keeps the original dimensions. No canvas is added or cropped.

Common issues and how to fix them
Image appears rotated in some apps but correct in others→
The EXIF orientation tag may conflict with the actual pixel data. Some apps auto-rotate based on EXIF, others do not. Saving the image through File Studio bakes the orientation into the pixels, which removes the ambiguity.
Rotated image has white or black triangles in corners→
This happens when a tool rotates by a non-90-degree angle and fills the empty corners. File Studio only rotates in 90-degree steps, so this does not occur. If you need to straighten a slightly tilted image, use an editor with free rotation and then trim the corners with Crop.
Image quality degraded after rotation→
Arbitrary-angle rotation requires resampling, which can soften details, while 90-degree steps do not. JPG files are re-encoded when saved, so rotate once from the original rather than repeatedly, or work in PNG if you plan several edits.
